Easy Home Care
1. Let plants dry thoroughly between waterings. During Spring and Summer months, water every 1-2 weeks, depending on conditions and once a month during Fall and Winter Months.
2. For small plants, water an average of 1 ounce at roots. It's better to underwater than overwater.
3. Sunny spots with indirect sun is best, at least 6 hours per day. Your succulent will also do well under a lamp with at least 8 hours of light per day.
Top 5 common mistakes to avoid when growing succulents
1. Overwatering
Overwatering is the biggest mistake people make with succulents. Succulent roots are very susceptible to root rot which could lead to the demise of the plant. If any of your leaves start to turn yellow, translucent, or slimy, your plant may be getting too much water. Always let the soil dry out completely before watering again! During spring and summer you may be watering once every week or two. During dormant winter months, water once a month. Be careful and patient while you find your watering zen.
2. Wrong Soil
Succulents need well-draining soil and typically do not do well in regular garden soil. You can buy a special cactus succulent planting mix at a garden center, or you can mix your own succulent soil by following directions found on the internet.
3. No Drainage
Just as Succulents need well draining soil, they also need well-draining containers! Ideally, we prefer planters with drainage holes. While containers without drainage holes can hold far too much water for succulents when overwatered, we always use rocks and activated charcoal on the bottom of planters without holes to prevent root rot. And, do not overwater!
4. Overcrowded Live Arrangements
Succulent arrangements are gorgeous, but did you know many are temporary decoration just like a cut flower arrangement. While succulents like being close to each other, they can start to choke each other. If you find some plants in a crowded arrangement are withering or dying, it maybe time to separate some plants.
5. Dark Room With Low Light
Indoor Succulents need at least 6 hours of light per day. At home, find a sunny spot or place under a lamp. LED and grow lights work great. If your plant lives in your office, keep it under a lamp during the week and place it near a bright window on the weekends.
Happy Succulent Gardening!
